How long should you run your pool pump in winter in NSW?

When the temperature drops, your pool pump usually does not need to work as hard as it does through summer.

That does not mean switching it off until the weather warms up.

Even when nobody is swimming, your pool still needs regular circulation and filtration. The pump moves water through the filter, helps distribute pool chemicals and prevents stagnant areas where algae can begin making itself comfortable.

So, how long should you run your pool pump in winter?

For many residential pools in NSW, around four to six hours per day is a reasonable winter starting point. However, there is no single run time that suits every pool. Your pool size, pump type, filtration system, chlorinator, surroundings and water condition all matter.(1)

Whether your pool is in Sydney, on the Central Coast, around Lake Macquarie, in Newcastle or elsewhere in NSW, here is what you need to consider before changing the timer.

The quick answer

Most pools can reduce their daily pump run time during winter because cooler water, less sunlight and lower swimming activity generally reduce the demand on the pool.
A common winter guide is:

 

  • Four to six hours a day for many standard residential pools
  • Longer operation at a lower speed for some variable-speed pumps
  • Extra run time after heavy rain, storms or periods of high debris
Treat this as a starting point, not a setting to copy without checking your own pool.
Your neighbour might run their pump for four hours and have perfectly clear water. That does not mean your pool will agree.

Why does the pool pump still need to run in winter?

Your pool pump draws water from the pool and sends it through the filtration system before returning it to the pool.
This process helps:
  • filter out dirt and fine debris
  • circulate chlorine and other pool chemicals
  • prevent still areas in the water
  • support the operation of a saltwater chlorinator
  • keep the surface moving through the skimmer
  • maintain clear and healthy pool water
Turning the pump off for long periods may save electricity in the short term, but it can also leave you with poor circulation, falling chlorine levels and an algae problem that costs far more to correct.
Winter maintenance is generally easier and less expensive than a full recovery when spring arrives.

What affects your winter pool pump run time?

Pool size and water volume

A larger pool contains more water, so it may need longer filtration than a small plunge pool.
The pump also needs enough time to move and filter an appropriate amount of water. A pool technician can consider your pool volume, pump flow and filtration system when recommending a suitable schedule.


Pump size and type

Not all pool pumps move water at the same rate.
A traditional single-speed pump runs at one set speed. A variable-speed pump can operate more slowly for longer periods, which may use less electricity whilst maintaining steady circulation.(2)
This means a variable-speed pump might run for more hours than a single-speed pump without necessarily costing more to operate.
Looking at the number of hours alone does not tell the full story.

Your chlorinator

If your saltwater chlorinator operates with the filtration system, reducing the pump run time can also reduce how much chlorine is produced.
You may need to adjust both the timer and the chlorinator output as the seasons change. Do not assume that cutting the pump run time in half will automatically leave the chlorine level where it needs to be.
Test the water after making changes and adjust the settings based on the result.(3)


Leaves and surrounding trees

A pool surrounded by trees may need more filtration than a covered pool with very little debris.
Across Sydney, the Central Coast, Lake Macquarie and Newcastle, winter can still bring wind, rain and plenty of leaves. If the skimmer basket is filling quickly, reducing the run time too far may allow debris to remain in the pool.
Keep the skimmer basket, pump basket and filter clean so the system can work properly.

Rain and changing weather

Heavy rain can dilute pool chemicals, affect the water balance and wash dirt or organic material into the pool.
Your normal winter timer may be fine during a dry week but may need to be increased after several days of rain.
After heavy weather:
  • filter out dirt and fine debris
  • circulate chlorine and other pool chemicals
  • prevent still areas in the water
  • support the operation of a saltwater chlorinator
  • keep the surface moving through the skimmer
  • maintain clear and healthy pool water
The timer is not a set-and-forget decision for the entire season.

Can you turn your pool pump off completely in winter?

We would not recommend it.

Australian winters are milder than those in countries where pools are completely closed and winterised. In most parts of NSW, residential pools remain filled and operational throughout the year.

Reducing the pump run time is usually appropriate. Switching the entire system off for weeks or months is a different story.

Your pool still needs filtration, circulation and sanitiser during winter, even if nobody is planning to swim.

A pool that looks clear today can quietly become a springtime science experiment if the water is not being maintained.

How to reduce your pool pump run time safely

Do not make a dramatic change and then forget about it.

A better approach is to reduce the timer gradually and monitor the water.

Step 1: Check the current settings

Take note of:
  • the current daily run time
  • the pump speed, if adjustable
  • the chlorinator output
  • the current chlorine level
  • the clarity of the water

Step 2: Reduce the run time gradually

If the pool has been running for eight hours a day, you might reduce it in stages rather than going straight down to the lowest possible setting.
Give the pool time to respond before making another change.

Step 3: Test the water

Clear water does not always mean correctly balanced water.

Step 4: Watch the pool

Signs that your winter pool pump run time may be too short include:
  • cloudy or dull water
  • falling chlorine levels
  • algae beginning on steps, walls or corners
  • debris remaining on the surface
  • poor skimming
  • weak circulation from the return jets
If these appear, increase the filtration time and have the water tested ASAP.

What is the best time of day to run a pool pump in winter?

The best schedule depends on your electricity plan, solar system, chlorinator and pool equipment.

People with rooftop solar may choose to run the pump during daylight hours to use more of their own solar generation. Others may use off-peak periods where their electricity plan makes this worthwhile.(4)

However always be aware of noise if choosing to run your equipment outside of daylight hours, as this can become a problem if your neighbours can hear the equipment whilst laying in bed at night 😐

The most important thing is that the schedule gives your pool enough circulation and works correctly with the rest of the equipment.

Do not choose a cheaper time period if it prevents the chlorinator, cleaner, heater or other connected equipment from operating as required.

Should you change the pump speed as well as the timer?

Possibly.

If you have a variable-speed pump, the most efficient winter setting may involve running it at a lower speed for longer rather than running it quickly for a short period.
Lower-speed operation can provide steady filtration and circulation while reducing energy use.(2)

The right speed depends on your equipment and whether the pump also needs to operate:
  • a pool cleaner (e.g. a robot)
  • a chlorinator
  • heating
  • water features
  • in-floor cleaning
  • other automated equipment
